The Victor Batte-Lay Foundation Collection includes works by internationally celebrated artists with local connections and this exhibition will include works from
Ted Atkinson, Edward Bawden, John Moore, Camille Pissarro, Michael Rosenstein, Valerie Thornton, John Vine, Peter Coker, Maggi Hambling and Henry Collins. This is the first time so many of the pictures have been on show since the 2012 ‘Art for Colchester’ exhibition at The Minories Galleries
Colchester born Clarence Victor Batte-Lay was an avid collector of paintings and furniture. On the death of his wife Margaret, in 1955, her will directed that “an ancient building of antiquarian or archaeological interest” be bought in her late husband’s memory, to house and exhibit his collection “for the benefit and advantage of the inhabitants of Colchester”. The Minories on the High Street was bought and the Victor Batte-Lay Foundation collection was displayed there, before being stored in the Borough Museum resource centre. Since 2008 The Colchester Institute School of Art have been the leasehold custodians of The Minories Galleries.
